Nestled Among The Foothills
Of The Beautiful Ozark Mountains

Farmington, the seat of St. Francois County, is in the heart of Missouri's Parkland. It is served by State Highway 32 and US Highway 67, about 70 miles south of St. Louis.

Farmington started out as a small settlement in the 1790s when Missouri was still under Spanish rule. St. Francois County (pronounced "Francis"), was organized in 1821 from parts of Jefferson, Ste. Genevieve and Washington counties, and named for the St. Francois River.

The river itself is believed to have been named after St. Francois of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order. The region has a long established iron mining and smelting tradition in the Iron Mountain area. Its lead production operations made St. Francois County a key player in the Civil War. The St. Louis Iron Mountain Railroad ran through the county, permitting rapid deployment of Union troops from St. Louis.

Farmington enjoys 4 beautiful seasons. Our Ozark autumns showcase a stunning array of colors. The earliest frost usually occurs in October, and our average annual temperature is 55 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average of 29 degrees, and the warmest month is July with a 76.8-degree average. Average annual rainfall is 41 inches with an average yearly snowfall of 13.7 inches.

Farmington boasts tree-lined streets and graceful turn-of-the-century homes. The circa 1834 Long House is the oldest remaining house in town. The historic downtown district centers around the St. Francois County Courthouse and other buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Area annual events include the St. Francois Pow Wow with Native American arts, crafts and dance contests, the Flat River Grand Prix, the Winter Wonderland (the Christmas season kick-off with an annual Christmas parade, the Annual Mineral Area College Jazz Festival, the annual Farmington Country Days and more.

Area schools include Truman Kindergarten, the Roosevelt, Jefferson and Washington-Franklin elementary schools, Farmington Middle School, Lincoln Intermediate, Farmington Senior High School and others. Colleges and universities include Mineral Area Regional Medical Center School, Jefferson College, St Louis Community Colleges, Webster University, St Louis University, Maryville University of St Louis and Washington University.

Hospitals and health centers in Farmington include Mineral Area Regional Medical Center, Parkland Health Center and Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center.

St. Francois County features St. Francois State Park, the Pike Run Hills, hiking trails at Coonville Creek Wild Area and the Big River. Other places of interest in St. Francois County include Buck Mountain - a 120-acre area best known for its natural granite formations; the 1,487,009-acre Mark Twain National Forest - the only national forest in the state; the beautiful St. Francis River and St. Joe State Park - the 3rd largest state park that also features 2 lead-ore mill buildings designated as a Missouri Mines State Historic Site.
